Jack Russell Training Tips that Work

by Andyl Hannerl

The bright eyes and the scruffy face of the Jack Russell terrier is what makes them one of the popular choices for pets and are also a popular choice in television and movies. The only disadvantage that you may have with a Jack Russell terrier if he is not well trained is his high and mighty attitude, thinking that he should run the household and not you.

If you think that the Jack Russell terrier is the right pet for you, you will need to commit a lot of Jack Russell training so that your dog will accept you as the head of the house and not the other way around,

Be sure that as soon as your pet comes home, training should start already and should continue until your dog learns the basic commands and when he treats your family with respect. Here are some tips for Jack Russell training that will help you make your dog provide joy to your family.

Consistency in Rules

The Jack Russell terrier is a very intellectual animal but the only thing that you need to look out for is the attitude that goes along with their being smart. This can be a drawback in Jack Russell training. The terrier can sometimes go against their owners authority even after learning the house rules. And this is why you will need to stay consistent with your dog. Give him the proper punishment if he disobeys a rule at the same time give him praises when he obeys your orders.

Remember that the house rules should be consistent at all times to keep your dog in his position. And yes, you will need a lot of time and tolerance in training them, but they will eventually surrender to your authority.

Instincts come naturally

The Jack Russell terrier has very strong hunting instincts, which may provoke it to attack the family cat or take off from his yard at the first interesting scent. These instincts cannot be trained away through Jack Russell training, so owners need to take proper precautions to keep them under control. In most cases, this means keeping your dog on a leash when you walk him and making sure your yard is sufficiently confined.

They are the type of dogs who normally digs, and because of this, it would be best if you check your yard timely to ensure that your pup is not digging his own escaper hole. It would also be ideal if you do not have any cats or small pets in the same house as it is not a guarantee that your pet will not hunt your other pets on occasion.

Although Jack Russell training may take more patience and time than training other breed of dogs, you will be sure to have great rewards after. These terriers are loaded with great personality, intellect and are super loyal to their owners and with proper training, they will surely delight and entertain your family for a long time.

Ways To Stop Dog Aggression

by Andyl Hannerl

There are many reasons that a dog might become aggressive toward other dogs. Some dogs might get nervous or fearful around other dogs. In other cases the dog is striving to be the dominant dog. In other cases, the dog is becoming aggressive since he is defending his territory.

An owner can also be the reason why his dog is aggressive. This can happen because the owner never socially introduces his dog to other dogs or because the dog is trying to be protective of his master, and become aggressive in this manner at the same time are becoming sexually aggressive too.

Tips

Another way of stopping dog aggression is by ensuring that a dog is introduced to other animals as a puppy. Always allow your puppies to play with dogs that are mature and have the best behavior.

When this happens, they will learn the proper behavior that the older dogs have. They will also see that other dogs are okay and it is not a need to protect their owner from other animals nor is it a need to fight for their territory.

Another way to stop dog aggression when a dog starts to become aggressive is to address the issue immediately each time it happens. The dog should never be allowed to get away from this type of dangerous behavior. A head collar or muzzle can be effective while the dog is in training to stop dog aggression, but is not the solution to the problem in the long run.

A way to stop dog aggression is through strict training so that the dog is tuned into the instructions of the owner rather than focusing on the other animal. The dog should be trained to focus on the owner so that his attention is there and the owner can give another command to the dog, such as 'down' or 'sit' while there is another dog around.

The owner should also have control over his behavior and feelings no matter how small it is so that the dog will not take his owners behavior as a cue to become aggressive. This will help stop dog aggression because the dog will only take its cue from its owner.

Once the dog has been trained to focus, the dog can also be distracted by being trained to look for a treat when there is another dog around. The treat can be thrown to the ground and the dog can be told to find it, thus distracting the dog from the other dog and stop the dog aggression before it starts.

Fixing Dog Behavior Problems

by Andyl Hannerl

Adopting a new puppy is always such a joy. But you need to know that there are a lot of training issues that need to be worked on from the start. Although a puppy is unquestionably cute, if some specific behaviors are not fixed from the start and if dominance is not built by the owner, the puppy will have a lot of very destructive behaviors that will be harder to address as an adult.

You will find a lot of many simple solutions to these problem behaviors. One of which is starting training as soon as a puppy enters the household. A lot of the problem behaviors will not even be apparent as they have already been addressed during the initial times that these behaviors occurred.

Issues

A lot of people or dog owners usually go to professional dog trainers to help them address the dog behavior problems they have with their pets. One of the behaviors that is common among dogs is their excessive barking which is considered a problem.

There are some dogs that seem to have the propensity to bark at every possible noise, person, other dog or animal, and just for the fun of it. This barking can become annoying to the owner, and also to the neighbors, especially if the individual lives in an apartment or condominium.

Another dog behavior problem is digging in the yard. This can be a difficult issue to stop once it has started and can cause a lot of damage and even safety issues if it is not corrected.

Digging also destroys gardens, flower beds and creates holes in the yard. More often than not, dogs usually dig near the circumference of the yard so that they can make exits and they can escape which can be very harmful for the dogs.

Having a lot of animal pets in the house can also be a reason for having the dog behavior problem known as food aggression. Dogs being territorial, they will be very protective of their food from the other animals around the house. They have a tendency of snapping at the other animals of chase them away from their food bowl. If this is the scenario, this can be very dangerous as they might start having a fight and if you have toddlers at home, the behavior can be acted upon them if they are in the area. Another common aggression is between two male neutered dogs.

In addition to these aggression problems, there are also dog behavior problems involving a variety of other issues such as separation anxiety, chewing problems, thieving issues, running away and whining.
