Importance Of Insulating Your Dog’s House

by Moses Wright

The importance of insulating your doghouse depends on whether or not the location has extreme temperatures. The dog breed can also dictate how well-suited they are for outdoor living therefore, affect the importance of having your dog's house insulated.

The typical extreme weather for summer and winter months for that area determines the importance of insulating your dog's house. In regions of the world where there are extremely cold temperatures in winter or extremely high temperatures in summer, and insulated doghouse may not be enough protection for the dog.

Insulated doghouses can be purchased in the condition that they are ready to be used. Customize doghouses or a doghouse made from a doghouse kit can be insulated.

Doghouses that are insulated may have one or more different types of insulation. The interior of the doghouse may have insulation panels or there may be insulation between the interior and exterior walls of the doghouse. Styrofoam sheets or polystyrene foam may be used between the walls of the doghouse.

Insulation and a doghouse helps during summer months by shielding the interior of the doghouse from some of the heat. In winter, the insulation can trap the body heat from the dog inside the doghouse.

The walls should not being the only parts of doghouse that are insulated. The dog owner should make sure that the roof and the floor are also insulated. When purchasing a doghouse, the dog owner may want to ask what type of insulating material the doghouse contains.

If a dog has not been kept outdoors, the dog may have difficulty adjusting to any temperature extremes. If a dog is to be kept outdoors at certain times, the dog should be kept outdoors for short periods of time from the time it is a puppy.

Some dog breeds have an easier time adjusting to being outdoors. Dogs with thick, heavy coats may not have as much difficulty outdoors during the winter months as dogs was short coats.

A doghouse that is insulated in to help the dog be comfortable in cold weather needs to be the proper size for the dog. A small dog in a doghouse that is too large will not have the benefit of the inside of the doghouse being sufficiently heated by their body heat.

There are a few options for doghouses that are to be used during times of extreme temperatures. Heating pads and heating and cooling units are becoming common doghouse accessories.

Keeping a dog outdoors all the time is not recommended. Dogs need socialization. A dog that lacks socialization can become aggressive.

Dog Training – Positive vs. Negative Reinforcement

by Harry Littman

Dogs will naturally do things that we don't want them to do. They will chew anything that they can get their teeth on, they will bark like there is no tomorrow, they will pee and poo where they please, they will dig holes and destroy the backyard, and so on. If we want the dog to behave, we must train him. Dogs do not possess the ability to learn proper behavior on their own.

There are two basic methods of dog training - positive and negative reinforcement. Most experts in the field of animal behavior recommend positive reinforcement as a primary method of training.

Positive reinforcement is a punishment-free training method where the trainer rewards a dog for good behavior. A desired behavior is reinforced with rewards such as treats, verbal praises, toys, and so on. The dog will associate something positive for specific behavior and this will increase the likelihood of performing that behavior in the future. Eventually he or she will do it with no tricks or treats.

The opposite of positive reinforcement in a negative reinforcement where the trainer delivers a punishment, or negative consequence, when the dog performs an undesirable behavior. Punishment gets the dog to stop doing something. Negative reinforcement is connected to misbehavior.

Most experts agree that dog friendly training based on positive reinforcement is more effective that negative reinforcement. It's not associated with fear, discomfort, pain, or avoiding something and in general produces better results.

Although the main training method should be positive reinforcement, negative reinforcement does have its role in the training process. But it should be used very carefully, because it can produce a significant long-lasting negative effects.

I myself always use mainly positive reinforcement techniques to train my dogs and I love training them. This builds a strong relationship and it's a great way to bond. Always remember, a well behaved dog is a happy dog and a credit to its owner.

Getting the Best Out of Discount Dog Toys

by Kim Fleming

There are so many options for discount dog toys. Some owners may still wonder though if dogs really need toys. Others recognize the value of dog toys but think that buying the expensive kind is always the best. Here are what every dog owner might be interested in knowing about dog toys and discounted toys.

Dog Toys

Giving toys to your dog is one great way to show him that you care for him. Dogs are naturally playful so they need something to play with. Their toys however are more than just mere play things. Dog toys channel your dog's energies away from unwanted behavior. Toys also provide a lot of physical and mental exercise. Best of all, dogs get to form loving connections with their masters when they play together with toys.

Dog Varieties

Not all dogs are the same, and different dogs have different needs for toys. The size, texture and style of the toy should fit the size, age, breed and temperament of your pet. There are different ways for you to find out which toys are appropriate. You can trust the toy package label or the opinion of the sales clerk at the toy shop. You can also ask a veterinarian or a dog expert for his opinion.

If you make your purchase online, be sure you examine the descriptions carefully before you pay for any toy. Some reputable online stores will be so helpful as to provide you with comprehensive information on dog toys for specific dogs. You can also look into dedicated online sites that focus solely on dogs.

Discounts

Do not always go for the expensive ones at first. Instead, try to shop for those at discount prices. This is because all dogs are unique. There is no guarantee that your dog will love a toy that other dogs go crazy over. You can get stuck with an expensive item that your dog will not even look at. Discounted toys are a great way to find out what your dog likes without blowing your money.

Do not shy away from discount dog toys, thinking that they are of a lower-quality or that they are second hand products. Some stores and online sites that offer discounts have low prices because they buy directly from factories and sell very close to the factory price. Some stores might also sell low because they are having a clearance sale.

Shopping Online

For online buyer, it is important that you buy from a store with good reputation. It is more preferable that the seller is engaged in selling dog toys only. You can check out a store's reputation by checking customer feedback from forums and review sites.

Online stores should also carry a wide range of toy options to choose from. After all, one rule in shopping for dog toys is to get a handful of various toys that you can rotate on different days of the week. This can help keep your dog interested in playing. Having a wide range of merchandise will also increase the chances that you will find just the right items for your dog.

If you are a wise shopper, you will find that the discount dog toys can be just as good as the expensive ones. They are good buys for both your pet and yourself, as long as you do not sacrifice your dog's safety and health for the price.
